Andy Cole insists United winger Antony should improve next season

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has expressed doubts about winger Antony’s suitability for United, stating that he is not convinced the player has reached the required standard in his first season in English football.

The Brazilian was signed by United for a hefty £85 million fee last August, as manager Erik ten Hag sought to reunite with the player following their successful partnership at Ajax.

Despite showcasing moments of brilliance during his debut season at Old Trafford, the 23-year-old winger has received mixed reviews.

While he was recognized for his outstanding goal against Barcelona in the Europa League, which earned him the club’s goal of the season award, his overall Premier League performance was less impressive.

The Brazilian’s contributions were limited with only four goals and two assists in the league. Andy Cole, who excelled in more traditional wide roles at United, remains unconvinced about Antony’s potential impact at United.

While speaking with sources, the former United player said:

“Antony has had two assists in the Premier League this season, and he’s only scored four goals. I know it’s his first season and Manchester United paid a lot of money for him, but if you’re a winger then you have to be creating more chances.”

“Look at Manchester United’s former players like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, look at their goals and assists, that’s Manchester United’s standards. Will Antony improve next season? I hope so, he’s young but we’ll have to see.”

The Brazilian winger needs to address his shortcomings and deliver in the upcoming season. Although the pressure of coming with a high price tag hits differently, Antony has the capability to prove his true worth.

He played in the majority of games when fit and he needs to contribute with more goals and assists if he wants to truly justify his spot in the starting XI. The fans will hope that the 23-year-old will learn from his decent debut season at Old Trafford.

The former Ajax winger has worked wonders under Ten Hag as he helped the Dutch club win numerous accolades. He will hope to continue this rhythm under the same manager but now at a different club.
