Andy O’Boyle appointed as deputy football director of Manchester United

According to SkySports, Andy O’Boyle has been named as Manchester United’s deputy football director.

O’Boyle will work under football director John Murtough to “lead the club’s football strategy across the first team, academy, and women’s team,” after leaving his position as head of elite performance at the Premier League.

His responsibilities will include assisting John Murtough, the club’s football director, in directing the club’s football plan for the first team, academy team, and women’s team.

After working with youngsters like a young Marcus Rashford, O’Boyle departed the club 16 years ago.

O’Boyle, a lifetime United supporter, has previously worked at Carrington, but his ties to the club go back even deeper. He began his career as a player in Northern Ireland’s United Centre of Excellence before focusing on behind-the-scenes activities.

After leaving United, O’Boyle worked as a fitness coach at Wrexham for two years until joining Coventry City as a sports scientist in 2008. Between 2011 and 2017, he spent a significant amount of time at Anfield as a conditioning coach.

The FA noticed his work at Liverpool and signed him as a conditioning coach for the national teams Under 21 side. O’Boyle joined the Premier League as their head of elite performance after only a year with England.

United’s approach for him for this new post forced him to leave the Premier League role. This summer, O’Boyle will earn his UEFA Pro Licence, and he is pursuing a doctorate in sports science.
