Former Manchester United attacker Angel Gomes has expressed his wish to play for the Red Devils again in the future. The 22-year-old is currently playing for LOSC Lille in Ligue 1.
The Manchester-based club’s academy has produced some wonderful talents and Gomes was one of them. While the kid was still at the academy, several fans had big hopes for him. However, he was never truly able to make it onto United’s starting lineup and he signed for Lille in 2020 summer. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the 22-year-old did not completely rule out going back to Manchester in his latest interview.
He said:
“It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. I felt that, had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me.”
“Luís Campos and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more. That’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me. Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home.”
“I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
The midfielder was loaned to Portugal as soon as he joined the Ligue 1 team. He went on loan to Boavista for a season before coming back for the 2021/22 season.
The England U21 international played 30 times for Les Dogues in all competitions last year. He played in several positions and recorded three goals and two assists. However, Gomes appears to have found his footing in the current campaign. The 22-year-old has established himself as a consistent player for Lille. And Paulo Fonseca has chosen to portray him in the role of number 8 instead.
The 22-year-old England U21 international is honing his talents in France, despite never reaching his full potential with the Red Devils. It remains to be seen whether he truly returns to Old Trafford one day.
