Manchester United are set to lose their u-23 starlet Angel Gomes after failing to tie him down with a contract. Gomes is a talented midfielder who is set to leave the club after his contract with United will expire today. Solskjaer has confirmed that negotiations between the club and the young Englishman’s party have hit a wall.
The 19-year old is the youngest player to play for the United side, after the legendary Duncan Edwards in 1953. Gomes is also the first player born in the 2000s to play in the Premier League. Angel Gomes has also captained Manchester United in the u-23 level as well as England in u-16, u 17, and u-18 levels.
Angel Gomes made his United debut way back in 2017, against Crystal Palace. The attacking midfielder has been training with the first-team for a couple of years now but hasn’t yet broken into the first-team. He has been impressive in the Premier League as well, scoring 4 and assisting 2 goals in just 5 games.
Gomes was seen as one of the best graduates from the academy but hasn’t been able to reach his full potential yet. His small height is seen as one of the constraints stopping him to play at the highest level. Gomes surely has the technical ability to play in the Premier League, but his small built has stopped managers from using him.
Gomes is highly regarded of in the u-23 football circuit and wanted more guaranteed playing time in the first-time. It is also reported that Gomes wasn’t happy with the contract put up to him by United. Gomes has been heavily linked with Chelsea and some Spanish clubs as well because of his technical abilities.
Gomes was upset with the fact that players of his age were given more chances and game-time than him. Manchester United are also linked with a host of players belonging to his position and age group, which Gomes didn’t take lightly. Gomes has also been pushed further down the pecking order after the arrival of Bruno Fernandes.
Solskjaer earlier said that the midfielder’s contract extension is well on its way and he expects Gomes to stay. But, today he has confirmed that the club has failed to tie down the 19-year old to a new contract. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be another Pogba-like scenario and the club doesn’t regret letting Angel Gomes leave for free.
