League Cup holders Manchester City will be playing fierce local rivals Manchester United in the semi-finals as the other fixture will include with Leicester City taking on Aston Villa.
Pep Guardiola’s men have won the tournament two years in a row and booked their place in the last four with a 3-1 win at League One outfit Oxford United on Wednesday.
However, in order to repeat that success in the League Cup, they will have to get through a two-legged tie against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s resurgent Manchester, who knocked out Colchester United in their quarterfinal encounter at Old Trafford.
Manchester United will host the first leg of the semifinal clash and the red half of Manchester last won the EFL Cup back in the 2016-17 season, defeating south coast club Southampton in the final, while the noisy neighbors have triumphed in four of the past six editions of the competition.
In the second semi-final of the League Cup, Brendan Rodgers’ high flying Leicester City are at home in the first leg against Aston Villa who needed penalties to get through a last-eight meeting with Merseyside outfit Everton.
Villa was the first team into the penultimate round after easily beating an inexperienced Liverpool side 5-0 in the quarter-final on Tuesday.
The first leg of the League Cup will be played in the first week of the New Year on January 6th and the return matches are set for January 27th.
