Atletico Madrid might be tempted to sell United target Matheus Cunha

Manchester United target Matheus Cunha will be available in January after Atletico Madrid’s disastrous Champions League run, according to Marca.

Atletico Madrid had a deficit of €40 million last summer, and they expect their losses to rise by another €30 million as a result of their early withdrawal from European competitions.

Cunha is reportedly one of the top possibilities who may leave the club in January as a result of the club’s attempts to sell their players.

According to reports, United tried to sign the Brazilian international during the most recent transfer window, but Atletico Madrid judged the midfielder “untouchable.” Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Cristiano Ronaldo are United’s current centre-forward alternatives; although, the latter may seek a new challenge in January.

Last summer, the Portuguese player was keen to leave the club and play in the Champions League. According to rumours, the board won’t prevent his departure in the coming year.

Manager Erik ten Hag will undoubtedly want a replacement if Ronaldo decides to leave and United might launch a new effort to sign Cunha from Atletico.

With six goals and six assists in just 1,050 minutes of action in the Spanish top division, the Brazilian evolved into a super-sub for Atletico last season. With only two assists from 370 minutes this term, he has been unable to recreate the same. The 23-year-old is undoubtedly more gifted than serving as a regular replacement and, if he were to leave the team this winter, would aim for a regular starting position.

Atletico won’t come close to meeting his €100 million release clause, and they may want to recuperate the €26 million they paid to Hertha to sign him last year.
