Bayern Munich consider making a move for United star Scott McTominay

According to The Sun, Bayern Munich might consider making an unexpected move for Manchester United’s midfielder Scott McTominay if they are unable to secure the transfer of Fulham’s Joao Palhinha in January.

Bayern came close to signing Palhinha during the summer, but the £56 million deal fell apart because Fulham couldn’t find a suitable replacement for him.

The Cottagers had eyed McTominay as the ideal replacement for Palhinha in the defensive midfield role, but the Scottish star was hesitant to make the move to Craven Cottage on the transfer deadline day.

It is now being stated that Bayern may set their sights on McTominay in January if they are unsuccessful in convincing Fulham to let go of Palhinha, who has recently signed a new contract.

The new contract for the Portuguese star does not include a release clause, giving the Premier League side the opportunity to demand a significantly higher transfer fee.

McTominay is being considered as a backup option for Bayern, with Thomas Tuchel showing an appreciation for the 26-year-old’s qualities after observing him while he was in charge of Chelsea.

Tuchel is reportedly determined to acquire a new defensive midfielder for his team, particularly after a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen where they conceded their lead on two occasions.

United are currently dealing with a shortage of midfielders due to injuries to Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, and Kobbie Mainoo. Fortunately, Mount and Amrabat are expected to make a swift return, while Mainoo may recover by the New Year.

This situation could potentially open the door for McTominay’s departure during the January transfer window. The midfielder surprisingly started in the recent match against Brighton, but he had minimal impact while playing in a central role.

During his more than 80 minutes on the pitch, the Scottish midfielder completed just 15 passes and won only two ground duels before being substituted late in the game.

It’s evident that McTominay feels more at ease when playing in the defensive midfield position for his club. With a market value of £45 million, he might have the chance to secure regular playing time in that role at Bayern under Tuchel.

However, it’s unlikely that he will displace Casemiro at Man United. Moreover, there may be increased competition from Amrabat and Mainoo in the near future.
