Manchester United’s key player, Bruno Fernandes, is thrilled and excited about being chosen as the captain at Old Trafford.
During his first interview as the official captain of the team, Fernandes openly shared his emotions and described how honoured and delighted he feels to take on such a prestigious responsibility.
Erik ten Hag has chosen the 28-year-old as the new captain of the team. This decision came after removing Harry Maguire from the captaincy due to his underperformance at the end of the last season.
United officially introduced the former Sporting Lisbon playmaker as the new skipper on Thursday during their pre-season preparations for the upcoming Champions League campaign.
As stated by the club’s official website, the midfielder was excited and proud of this role as he said:
“Obviously, it’s a great honour. The first time [I wore the captain’s armband] was in the Champions League against PSG.”
“I was getting a little bit surprised by Ole, but obviously I said to him at the time it’s just such an honour for me. I still have the armband and the shirt from that game because I wanted to keep it for myself because this is something that is not for everyone.”
“And it’s something that has to make you proud, has to make you understand that you are in a place where everyone would like to be: playing for Man United.”
Fernandes is not new to this leadership role, as he has frequently worn the captain’s armband over the past three years. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer initially entrusted him with this responsibility in 2021.
The Portuguese’s appointment as the new captain of United was seen as a mere formality, as both the club and fans believe he is the perfect fit for the role.

Although Maguire was the official captain during the League Cup final in February, Fernandes acted as the on-field skipper as the Red Devils secured a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.
However, during the trophy ceremony, the centre-back had to lift the trophy alongside Fernandes. Now, the situation has changed, and Maguire’s future at the Theatre of Dreams seems uncertain, while the Portuguese star begins a well-deserved new chapter as the captain of Man United.
