Chelsea have decided against making an approach for Man United rebel Cristiano Ronaldo who was offered to the Stamford Bridge giants in this summer’s transfer window.
Ronaldo is said to have conveyed his decision to the United board of his desire to head out the exit door at Old Trafford with the 37-year-old looking to join a club which competes in the Champions League this coming season.
United’s arch rivals Chelsea emerged as shock frontrunners for Ronaldo’s signature with the west London outfit opening talks with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes in Portugal over the possibility of a move to the English capital.
According to a report from The Athletic, however, it appears that Chelsea are withdrawing their candidature from the chase to land the Portuguese superstar with the Blues bringing in four-time Premier League winner Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.
Sterling joins Thomas Tuchel’s Blues on a five-year contract in a £47.5 million deal and the England international is being lined up as the replacement for the outgoing Romelu Lukaku who re-signed for Inter Milan earlier this summer on loan.
