The summer transfer window has already had Manchester United and its players in the headlines for the right and wrong reasons. The Red Devils have sent out several players on-loan at the beginning of the season, out of which one was Chris Smalling. But now, the centre-back is returning to Old Trafford after AS Roma and United couldn’t agree on a permanent deal.
Smalling has had a great season with AS Roma in the Italian Serie-A, after being shipped out of United on-loan. The former United captain has rejuvenated his career and has been one of the best defenders in the Italian league. Smalling wanted to stay with AS Roma and so did the club but a move didn’t materialize with United.
The Red Devils wanted about £18m for Smalling, but Roma didn’t want to give any more than £12m. Roma wanted to sign Smalling on-loan for another season before buying him permanently, but couldn’t strike a deal with United. This also means that the 30-year old will not be a part of Roma’s Europa League campaign that kicks off again in a day.
I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season. To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten. I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA! 💛❤️ 🐺 pic.twitter.com/9vHfpWUNsz

The centre-half has found himself a lot of suitors after his successful season in Italy’s capital. Juventus, AS Roma and Inter Milan, are all looking at Smalling but Roma are favourites to secure his signature.
