Chris Smalling might have a lifeline at United

Chris Smalling has returned to Old Trafford after a successful season with AS Roma in Italy, with whom he was on-loan for a season. The defender has rejuvenated his career and was one of the best defenders in the Serie-A last season. Smalling’s loan deal was imminent of becoming a permanent deal but the board decided to bring back the former United captain.

Chris Smalling is now tipped to get a second chance by Solskjaer who is short of fit and quality defenders. Maguire and Lindelof have been the only centre-backs who have been fit throughout the season. Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have been injured for most parts of the season and haven’t been in contention for the match-day squad.

Solskjaer has to decide on the 30-year old centre-back this season, as he has impressed in the Serie-A. The Norwegian said: “It was best for him to go and play for a year in Roma and he has shown he will be valuable, I’ve been speaking to Chris throughout. I’ve been delighted with his season.”

Smalling was gutted to return to Old Trafford but will surely not pass the chance of shining for United once again. This summer transfer window is very important for the rest of Smalling’s career as he has only a few years left at the top level.
