Chris Smalling talks about his horrifying United exit

Chris Smalling was a loyal servant for Manchester United for a decade before leaving for AS Roma this summer permanently. The former United captain is doing very well for the Italian club but his move was under serious threat this summer due to the lack of competence in the United board. In his recent interview with The Telegraph, Smalling has expressed his frustration about how Manchester United dealt with his situation.

Chris Smalling was sent on-loan to AS Roma last summer on-loan as Solskjaer didn’t have the centre-back in his plans. His loan ended this summer and he was eventually sold permanently to the Italian club but not without fuss. It was like a saga on its own with several turns and twists before Smalling joined Roma in the final hours of the transfer window.

In his recent interview, Smalling said: “I knew that my days under Ole were pretty much numbered. I was just a bit frustrated. One, I would like to have been told earlier and then, secondly, I was only able to go with just a day left of the Italian window being open. In an ideal situation I would have known early in the summer and made plans.”

Manchester United need to do things better in the transfer window to do well in the Premier League as well. The United board has been bad at recruitment and removing deadwood from the squad for almost a decade now, which is unforgivable. The Red Devils need to be proactive in the transfer market and must not make the same mistakes as they did this summer.
