Tottenham centre-back Christian Romero believes that Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez are the best defenders in the Premier League this season.
The Argentine has been a remarkable player for the Reds since joining from Ajax this summer. The 23-year-old has already made a big impression by his brave performances at the back-line.
Erik ten Hag has preferred to play the Argentine along with Raphael Varane and this partnership has yielded great results for the team. The pair have kept three clean sheets in the past six games and won five of those matches.
It is looking as if his signing was a big coup even if we paid £52 million to sign him from the Dutch side. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Spurs centre-back and fellow Argentine teammate Romero gave his vote to Martinez when asked about the best defender in the league at this moment.
He said:
“Today, the best defender for me is Virgil Van Dijk, always, and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United. For me, they are the best in the Premier League.”
It has been no surprise that the 5ft 9in centre-back has played at his best level even after receiving wide-spread criticism due to his short stature. But he has proved that his height was never an issue and he already possesses skills to be the best defender in the league.
United needed such a solid defender after enduring a difficult campaign last year where they conceded a record number of goals (52) in the league and also lost their top four spot in the league table.
