Cody Gakpo confirms that he had held talks with Erik ten Hag

PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo has revealed that he spoke with Erik ten Hag about a potential summer transfer to Manchester United.

Gakpo was on the Red Devils’ shortlist as they sought to improve their attacking firepower. But United had to spend a hefty €100 million in order to bring Antony to Old Trafford, leaving them with no money left over to sign the Dutch star.

In just 18 appearances this season, the PSV striker has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists, and when the World Cup kicks off next month, he might emerge as one of the tournament’s breakthrough stars.

The 23-year-old has now acknowledged that a summer transfer to United was very close but failed at the last moment. As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Gakpo said:

“I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United. In the end, the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.”

The young striker’s ambitions weren’t affected by a failed transfer because he has been on fire this season. In the best leagues in Europe this season, he has the most goals and assists.

Gakpo will undoubtedly be included in Louis van Gaal’s World Cup squad due to his impressive performances and he will be expected to play well for his nation. Ten Hag’s team lacks a depth of attackers as Cristiano Ronaldo is past his prime, and it remains unlikely that he will play at Old Trafford again next year. His current contract is set to expire in the summer although United has the option to extend it by one year.

Another striker at the manager’s disposal is Anthony Martial, but he is unreliable due to his history of injuries. Gakpo would be a fantastic addition to Ten Hag’s team and would be ideal for his long-term plans.
