PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo is still on Manchester United’s radar, but the Red Devils may suddenly have some competition from French club Paris Saint-Germain.
The Netherlands international was wanted by the Red Devils over the summer, but they were unable to sign him due to the enormous €100 million amount paid to acquire Antony from Ajax.
Gakpo has since openly held talks with United manager Erik ten Hag, and it’s possible that the team will need his services again in the future.
The United board is still attracted to the player and a transfer might happen next summer, particularly if Marcus Rashford decides to leave the club. However, Media Foot claims that Paris Saint-Germain is now United’s fiercest rival in the race to sign the Dutch attacker. Before the summer transfer window closed, Gakpo was rumoured to be moving to Leeds United, but the attacker changed his mind and elected to stay with PSV until the World Cup.
The 23-year-old no longer intends to sign for Leeds, thus the Red Devils must try to sign him before other elite clubs in January.
Gakpo’s performance this season at PSV has been nothing short of brilliance. He has made just 19 appearances for them but has already scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists. The Dutch star would attract even more attention by putting in some incredible performances for his national side.
There is a good chance that United will pass up Gakpo in January if they decide to wait until the summer to make headline deals. However. other elite clubs may enter the race and could hold the upper hand if the Red Devils fail to move quicker.
The guarantee of a regular starting place would be a significant advantage for United over Paris Saint-Germain.
Gakpo might claim the left-wing position as his own in the current Unietd line-up. This could help Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford to lead the line at Old Trafford.
