Cristiano Ronaldo creates World Cup history by scoring against Ghana

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been in the spotlight for the past two weeks, grabbed headlines on Thursday by creating history against Ghana.

All eyes were on the striker as Portugal faced Ghana in Group H action at Stadium 974, and he responded to the challenge as he has so frequently in the past. On Thursday, he did something that has never been done before by a male football player. The 37-year-old scored from the penalty spot in the 65th minute of the game to give Portugal a 1-0 lead. As reported by ESPN, Ronaldo made history by becoming the first male footballer to ever score in five different FIFA World Cups. Portugal ultimately won the game by a 3-2 scoreline.

He surpassed Pele and Miroslav Klose and Uwe Seeler, who also scored in four World Cups. In the process, Ronaldo further stretched his national goal-scoring record by scoring his 118th goal for Portugal.

Ronaldo scored his eighth World Cup goal in his career with the normally ice-cold penalty kick, capping up a turbulent week that saw the star forward shockingly leave Manchester United following weeks of hostilities with the team.

However, there was debate regarding the penalty, which was given when Ronaldo theatrically fell to the ground after making only slight contact with Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu.

With an equaliser in the 73rd minute, Andre Ayew gave Ghana some hope, but goals from Rafael Leao and Joao Felix gave the Euro 2016 victors the lead. Ghana received a late consolation goal from Osman Bukari.

After criticising the team and manager Erik ten Hag in a TV interview, United announced this week that Ronaldo will be leaving with immediate effect. However, Ronaldo has shown no signs of stress even after departing from Old Trafford.
