As reported by the club’s official website, star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned Manchester United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for a record-equaling fourth time.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been given the prestigious honour, after losing out to David De Gea in the club’s Players’ Player of the 2021-22 season voting.
Ronaldo earned the prized accolade three times during his first stay at United, in 2003/04, 2006/07, and 2007/08. Fans have once again chosen the Portuguese legend to accept the trophy after a stunning comeback to Old Trafford.
The only other Red to win four Sir Matt Busby awards is David De Gea.
Ronaldo has had a brilliant season, scoring 24 goals across all competitions and surprising those who doubted if the 37-year-old could still perform in English football following his lengthy spells in Spain and Italy.
The majority of Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals came in the Premier League, putting him third behind only Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min, who shared the Golden Boot. He again scored in double figures in Premier Lague (18).
The legendary six-time Ballon d’Or winner put in some glorious match-winning performances this season, including hat-tricks against Tottenham Hotspur, and Norwich City. He had also scored twice in his second debut against Newcastle United.
In addition to his domestic goals, the Portuguese striker scored six goals in the Champions League, showing his ability to perform in football’s greatest competition once again.
David de Gea finished second in the Sir Matt Busby award, with Fred, coming in third. Both the players have shown remarkable consistency during what has been a very difficult season for Manchester United.
