Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot admitted that he has gone through a “tough journey” at Old Trafford after scoring his first goal for the Premier League giants against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup.
The Italian defender was making his first start in all competitions since October last year and Dalot struck a fine second goal in United’s 6-0 FA Cup victory at Prenton Park, turning smartly after collecting a pass from French forward Anthony Martial and firing home to double the visitors’ lead.
It was a moment to savor for the 20-year-old defender, who has been restricted to only six appearances in all competitions this term due to injury worries.
And although physical problems have largely halted Dalot’s progress at Old Trafford since an encouraging first season following his move from Portuguese outfit Porto back in 2018 the 20-year-old has opened up about how troublesome his career was and the way he had to deal with most issues.
After netting his first goal of this season against Tranmere, Dalot told United’s in-house media that he celebration was a major sigh of relief following the tough journey, “Yeah, [the celebration] was more like a release of something I’ve been feeling inside me after these three months. It’s been a tough journey, but as I said, these kinds of things, a win and a goal make us feel like I’m doing a good job in fighting, working every day and taking the opportunities.”
Dalot should be ready to step up his game now following the arrival of Aaron Wan Bissaka in the summer from south London club Crystal Palace for a £50 million transfer fee.
