According to the Sun, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is willing to sign a new, long-term contract at a significant pay reduction from his present weekly wage of £375,000.
After underwhelming performances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford at the beginning of the season, the Spaniard’s role came under question.
The 32-year-old has since improved, making amazing saves while excelling in goal. In the third round of the FA Cup against Everton, he made a mistake, but United came out on top. His 12-month contract extension clause, which was set to expire in June of this year, has now reportedly been triggered.
De Gea is said to be aiming for a three-year deal. He is rumoured to be considering stability rather than leaving the club and would be ready to take a significant wage cut. A new contract renewal could result in a pay cut of more than 25% for the Spaniard.
De Gea had a difficult start to the year, and there were rumours that he wouldn’t work well for manager Erik ten Hag, who prefers goalkeepers who are more versatile in the box.
But the former Atletico Madrid graduate has improved recently. There is now more of a willingness to pass accurately from the back. Despite being a world-class goalkeeper with excellent reflexes, the Spaniard is nevertheless hesitant to make bold claims in the penalty area. The manager has given him lots of compliments.
Therefore, keeping him for the following few seasons seems like a no-brainer. Ten Hag has fully backed De Gea, so it might not be long before new terms are agreed upon.
