As reported by The Manchester Evening News, United goalkeeper David de Gea has been dropped out of Spain’s team for the upcoming international matches. He has been replaced by Robert Sanchez of Brighton and David Raya of Brentford.
The 31-year-old has had a mixed season with Manchester United with periods of world-class goalkeeping to disappointing series of losses. While he has saved their blushes on the field numerous times, he has not been able to digest the fact that the club is heading towards another trophyless season.
David de Gea’s chances have been hampered due to his inability to control the ball at his feet, particularly since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick.
To make matters, even more, worse, De Gea has been left out of Spain’s team to face Albania and Iceland later this month, by his coach.
The Spaniard had already fallen out of favor with La Roja and was not as well-liked in his homeland as he is in England, having lost his starting spot to Chelsea’s shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga two years back before being replaced by Athletic Club’s Unai Simon.
What’s more damaging for David de Gea is the fact that Luis Enrique has decided to choose two other Premier League goalkeepers over the Spaniard.
Brighton’s Robert Sanchez is already a semi-regular in the Spain system whereas, Brentford’s David Raya has never represented his country at any level and has only recently returned to the Bees’ lineup after a knee injury.
While David De Gea’s issues with the ball have been highlighted this year, Sanchez and Raya are both superb in controlling the ball, indicating that this is a quality Enrique is looking for in his goalkeepers this year.
