David Moyes full of praise for David de Gea’s outstanding performance

West Ham manager David Moyes showered David de Gea with huge praise following yesterday’s incredible Premier League performance by the Manchester United goalkeeper.

With a 1-0 victory over the Hammers, the Red Devils got back to a winning start but the win was never a comfortable one for the Reds. In the final minutes, the Hammers increased the pressure on United defenders.

The Hammers were denied an equaliser by Harry Maguire‘s important block, but De Gea also displayed superb form with three clutch saves, including two at full stretch. After the game, Moyes admitted that he was happy for the United goalkeeper but also dejected as his team was unable to score.

As reported by the Football London, he said:

“David de Gea’s two saves were fantastic, they really were, but he’s been a great goalkeeper for Manchester United. You don’t be Manchester United’s number one for that length of time if you’re not a fantastic goalkeeper.”

“He made two brilliant saves today for them and probably saved them from that point of view but it’s disappointing for us that we didn’t score because we put them under enough pressure”

The Spanish goalkeeper had a bad start for the Red Devils in the league after making mistakes in goal against Brentford and Brighton in the opening league games. He has now atoned for his mistakes with flawless performances. The Spaniard has returned to his outstanding form, which should give the backline and the manager more assurance.

The 31-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, although he might be open to taking a large salary reduction in exchange for a contract extension. Ten Hag has not yet made a decision about the future of De Gea, but it wouldn’t surprise us if the gaffer decides to keep him rather than go for another young goalkeeper.

Although the Spaniard may not have the same level of distribution skills as today’s goalkeepers, his lightning-quick reflexes in goal make him a legitimate match-winner when he is at his best.
