Dean Henderson has a couple of years left on his United contract, with an optional additional year too. But the English goalkeeper is only ready to sign a contract extension at Manchester United if he gets guaranteed playing time. To make matters worse for United, David De Gea hasn’t been at his best lately.
Dean Henderson has been amongst the very best in the Premier League, since his loan move to Sheffield United. The young goalkeeper is touted to become England’s shot-stopper soon after impressing at Bramall Lane. He has collected 11 clean-sheets out of 25 games for Sheffield United this season, showing his shot-stopping prowess.
However, Henderson’s parent club is Manchester United and his progress has impressed manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. Henderson’s step-up from the Championship, along with Sheffield United, has been pleasing to the eye. His performances have drawn attention and have started comparisons with current United Number 1, David De Gea.
David De Gea has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the World at United. He has won several “player of the year” awards for the club and saved the club from blushes. But lately, De Gea has been error-prone and has let some easy goals past him.
His error against Tottenham wasn’t his first this season, but Solksjaer still considers him as the best goalkeeper in the World. The manager believes that Dean Henderson will ultimately become Manchester United’s main goalkeeper, but not anytime soon. Though, it is reported that Ole has given De Gea 12 months to redeem his career.
Dean’s performances have drawn the attention of Chelsea, who might be in the market for a goalkeeper. Chelsea’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s form hasn’t been up to par, and they might look elsewhere to solve their problems.
Dean has played only one season in top-flight English football. He needs to prove himself for another season at least in the Premier League to earn himself regular playing time at United. Manchester United look to tie him under a long-term contract but he is holding out for guaranteed playing time at United.
His contract with United still has two years, with an additional year as an option also. It is highly unlikely for United to sell Henderson, but his future needs to be discussed and sorted out soon. He seems destined to be a successful player and one that the Red Devils can’t afford to lose.
