Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov suggests that in order for the club to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season, they should focus on signing a centre-back and a striker during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have shown progress under manager Erik Ten Hag. Their current position is on track for a top-four finish in the Premier League and success in two-cup competitions.
However, they briefly flirted with the title race this season, and they didn’t match the expectations at every level. United now aims to compete with teams like Manchester City and Arsenal in the quest for a league title.
To achieve this, strengthening the squad is crucial, particularly with the addition of a new striker. The team has relied heavily on Marcus Rashford for goals, indicating the need for additional attacking firepower.

United also plans to bring in a new central midfielder and a defender. Berbatov believes that recruiting both a central defender and a striker will be essential for United and Ten Hag if they want to have a chance at challenging for the title next season.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, he said:
“They need a striker, for sure. It’s been spoken about so much before. For me, it’s the priority for United in the summer transfer window because they need that player that’s going to get them over 20 goals a season. Who’s it going to be? We need to wait and see.”
“I also believe they need to buy a centre-back this summer and it’s a must, in my opinion. I believe that United are pretty much covered in every other area of the pitch, but if they don’t have that consistency, then they’re going to drop points when they shouldn’t drop points and end up in a similar position next season.”
Ten Hag’s side needs serious squad reinforcements if they want to compete at bigger stages. Signing a few new players should be the top priority. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane have been highly linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Similarly, United are also linked with a move for Napoli’s Kim Min-jae. A few outgoings are also expected and it would free some space in the squad and the financial books.
However, the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future may affect their transfer plans. It is still unsure whether the Glazers would be willing to leave the club in the upcoming months.
United need a decent budget to make quality signings and it remains to be seen whether they could execute their plans this summer.
