Erik ten Hag believes Andre Onana will bring a unique element to the squad

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed admiration for their recent signing, Andre Onana, and believes the Cameroonian goalkeeper will bring a unique element to the team’s performance on the field.

The Red Devils secured the services of Onana from Inter Milan earlier this month, and he made an impressive debut during the friendly match against Real Madrid this week.

Despite letting in two goals, Onana’s performance in goal was thrilling to watch during the match. He successfully completed 39 out of 41 pass attempts against Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid side.

Additionally, the African keeper delivered four long balls, made three saves, and secured one high claim. The former Ajax goalkeeper also accomplished one successful run-out for United.

During an interview with BBC Sport, Ten Hag was questioned about the transition from David de Gea to Onana this summer, and he had nothing but admiration for the 27-year-old goalkeeper.

The Dutch manager praised Onana, describing him as a ‘great’ goalkeeper with a ‘distinctive profile’. Ten Hag further stated that with Onana on the field, ‘something will change’ for United.

He’s a great goalkeeper and has a different profile. That’s why we wanted to sign him. With him, something will change in our game.”

De Gea had an impressive season, keeping 25 clean sheets, with 17 of them coming in the Premier League, earning him the Golden Glove award.

However, despite the positives, De Gea’s distribution was unconvincing, struggling with short passes under pressure and occasionally putting the ball out of play.

The 32-year-old also showed vulnerability against long shots, conceding four goals due to goalkeeping errors in the top flight, leading to criticism from some fans.

With the arrival of Onana, United expects a significant improvement in the goalkeeping position for the upcoming season.

The former Inter Milan star is more proficient in all-round attributes and excels in ball distribution, which aligns with manager Ten Hag’s preferences.

Onana brings additional mobility to the team, showcasing his capacity to make high claims and even operate as a sweeper-keeper when needed.

Given his impressive attributes, it comes as no surprise that the manager is delighted to have him as part of the squad. With Onana’s presence, United aims to elevate their performance from last season and contend for the league title.
