Erik Ten Hag confirms Donny Van De Beek’s best position at United

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Donny Van de Beek would be able to revive his career at Old Trafford by playing as an attacking midfielder.

The Dutch midfielder failed to hold onto a regular role at United for 18 months before moving to Everton on loan.

The former Ajax star has served in a variety of roles in the Eredivisie and was very comfortable with his play. However, after joining United in the summer of 2020, he did not play at all in the league in the first half of 2021/22.

Van de Beek established himself as an attacking midfielder at Ajax under the Ten Hag. He had the role of moving into the penalty area to score goals.

He scored 40 goals in three seasons from 2017 to 2019 while playing this role, including 17 goals in all competitions as the team advanced to the Champions League semifinals.

The manager was asked about the midfielder’s best position for which he replied:

“He can do both [sit deep and play high] – I know that from the past. But his best position is his capabilities in the box of the opponent, so playing short behind the striker. He has a really good smell for being in the right position.”

There have been expectations that Van De Beek may finally be able to find a spot and live up to his reputation now that Ten Hag has been tasked with rebuilding United. And it looks like the new manager is prepared to use his former player to the best of his ability.

In Ten Hga’s first game in charge, United romped to a 4-0 victory over Liverpool. Fans were thrilled by the huge improvement in performances from the previous season.
