Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that he must wait for 24 hours to find out whether Luke Shaw will require a significant amount of time off the pitch after suffering a hamstring injury against Brentford.
The Red Devils defeated the Bees by a score of 1-0 to move up to fourth place and move above Tottenham in the process, but the game was not without its difficulties for the hosts because Shaw was substituted in the opening period.
Shaw kicked off the contest and played in his 250th Red Devils game, a huge personal accomplishment. The feat was accomplished just one day after the England international signed a new contract with the team, extending his stay at the very least until the summer of 2027.
But things didn’t quite get started to the best of starts when, after only 24 minutes, he collided with Ivan Toney and received a yellow card.
After about 12 minutes, it grew worse. Tyrell Malacia replaced Shaw after he was substituted due to a hamstring injury, making Shaw’s 250th United appearance one of his shortest.
Given that United are halfway into the season, Ten Hag will be hoping that Shaw has suffered a slight injury that won’t keep the English star out for too long.
Given that the Red Devils must wait to learn the extent of the injury, the Dutchman admitted he was not in a position to provide any kind of thorough update on Shaw’s status.
As reported by the Mirror, Ten Hag said:
“I can’t say in this moment (what the injury is). I have to wait for tomorrow, what the diagnosis is, I took him straight off, didn’t want to risk. But we have to wait what’s the outcome.”
Shaw’s extended absence from the field would be bad news for United, who are getting ready to go to Wembley at the end of the month to play Brighton in the FA Cup semifinal.
Currently, the manager has the option to use Malacia in the upcoming games. But, the club would need Shaw to return back to his best shape as they will be playing crucial matches in the upcoming days.
United are already competing for titles in two more competitions and they would need their players to be available for the club. It remains to be seen whether Shaw would return back in the upcoming week or prefers to take an extended break.
