Erik Ten Hag looking to spoil Chelsea’s party by targeting Josko Gvardiol

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United has entered the hunt to sign RB Leipzig center-back Josko Gvardiol. They would be looking to spoil Chelsea’s transfer window by going after their targets.

After a poor season where they let in a record number of goals, the Red Devils are certainly looking to improve their defensive alternatives.

Captain Maguire has constantly underperformed, and new boy Raphael Varane has not provided the stability that ex-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had hoped for. Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, and Phil Jones have not been Man United’s trustworthy backup options.

As a result, they’ve been linked with a move for Josko Gvardiol, a 20-year-old Leipzig centre-back, for a sum of around £30 million. The interesting fact is that his left-footedness makes him a better fit for what Erik ten Hag is seeking in the heart of his defense.

If they are to sign him, they will have to beat out competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. All three Premier League clubs want to upgrade their back four in order to finish in the top four next season and maybe fight for the title.

Last season, Josko Gvardiol appeared in 29 Bundesliga games and contributed eight clean sheets. For the German team, he also scored two goals and contributed two assists.

Manchester United has already been linked with a number of defenders this summer. Prior to his departure, former interim coach Ralf Rangnick said that new head coach Ten Hag may need as many as ten new players in order to build a competitive squad.
