Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shown his support for goalkeeper Andre Onana ahead of their Premier League match against Sheffield United on Saturday evening.
Last summer, the Cameroon star made a move to the Red Devils from Inter Milan. His initial period with the club has been challenging, marked by crucial errors on his part.
In a recent match against Brentford, one of these errors occurred when Onana’s subpar goalkeeping led to Brentford scoring first at Old Trafford. However, Scott McTominay’s late heroics saved the day for Onana.
Man United are set to play against Sheffield tomorrow, and ahead of the game, Manager Ten Hag has expressed confidence that the 27-year-old goalkeeper will perform better for the club in the upcoming matches.
While speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
“He knows, we know, he will do much better and as every player who’s coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period but he has to step up.”
“Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel and David de Gea started not doomed and Andre knows that it is good to know a little bit from history. We live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do.”
Upon his arrival at Old Trafford, the African star carried a huge reputation, with many viewing him as an improvement over David de Gea, who departed on a free transfer.
However, the €55 million signing has struggled to establish himself, notably in his distribution of long balls and in handling low shots within the penalty box.

Despite these difficulties, there is no threat to his position, as Manager Ten Hag firmly supports him, and Onana is determined to show his true worth in the future.
On paper, United appears to be in a favourable position in their upcoming matches against Sheffield and Copenhagen.
Their next significant test will be the derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford. It’s crucial for the club to build momentum by stringing together a series of victories.
