Injury Update

Erik ten Hag talks about Christian Eriksen’s recent ankle injury

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Christian Eriksen sustained an ankle injury during Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Reading in the FA Cup fourth round match.

There were no surprises as the Dannish star was selected for the starting XI yesterday as he has been a key player this season. However, the 30-year-old midfielder was forced to be replaced before the hour mark after suffering an ankle injury as a result of Andy Carroll’s forceful challenge.

At the time, it seemed like a minor injury, but the Dane was seen leaving Old Trafford using crutches, suggesting that the injury may be more serious than initially thought. In his post-match press conference, Ten Hag revealed the midfielder’s injury setback and stated that it would take another 24 hours to understand the recovery period.

While speaking to the club’s official website, the Dutch boss said:

“It’s always difficult to say in this moment so short after the game has finished. But it’s an ankle [problem]. We have to see what is the diagnosis, so it costs us a minimum of 24 hours before we know that and then I can say more.”

The former Inter Milan midfielder has been a wonderful addition this season. With his contributions to goals, strong defence, and accurate passing, he has been outstanding in the number eight position.

Things don’t seem promising right now, especially given that he was using crutches to leave the stadium. He should be able to return quickly if there is nothing to worry about. Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot are the other two important players who are already out injured for United. Luke Shaw is also recovering from a minor injury.

If Eriksen is out for several weeks, the Red Devils may have little choice but to look for a replacement midfielder. With Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, and Scott McTominay as their only senior midfield options, they will need more depth. Following knee surgery, Donny van de Beek is also out for the whole campaign.
