According to the Mirror, Erik ten Hag wants to bring PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo to Manchester United this summer.
This year, as they try to strengthen their front line, United are in desperate need of a forward.
The initial target, Brazilian winger Antony of Ajax, has now all but been ruled out after the Amsterdam club increased its asking price from €60 million to €100 million.
RB Salzburg striker, Benjamin Sesko is being considered, but a quick transfer appears challenging right now. According to recent reports, United are now focusing on Gakpo as they look to improve the team before the transfer window closes.
The Dutch forward, who has attracted interest from other Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Leeds United, is thought to be available for a fee of €47 million.
The Dutch side’s willingness to make a move for its star player is still up in the air. United’s attacking lineup is utterly lacking firepower, with a large number of youngsters making up the majority of the Red Devils’ attacking bulk up top.
The only senior backup for Ten Hag’s favoured front three is Anthony Elanga, and Gakpo may suddenly be an option for the Old Trafford team given the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.
Gakpo had a fantastic season in the year 2018–19, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.
Last season, the 23-year-old star attacker averaged 2.9 dribbles per game in the league while also contributing 13 assists.
If the Red Devils can sign the versatile attacker, they will have made a superb choice.
