According to Fichajes, Manchester United is interested in signing Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy in the current transfer window. Erik Ten Hag wants to bolster his defensive options ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Ferland Mendy joined Real Madrid from Lyon back in 2019. He has been impressive for Los Blancos over the past few seasons. However, Antonio Rudiger’s signing has put his starting spot in danger.
To make way for Rudiger in the starting XI, David Alaba will switch to left-back. Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal already taking the remaining positions in Carlo Ancelotti’s back four. As a result, Real Madrid will decide on selling Ferland Mendy for around 48 million euros, the same amount they paid to sign him.
Simultaneously, the French left-back does not want to be a substitute player ahead of the Qatar World Cup in 2022, therefore a transfer could be in the works.
Chelsea and Juventus have also expressed an interest in signing the player. The 27-year-old full-back has made 105 appearances for Real Madrid in the last four years. He has scored five goals and assisted four more in all competitions.
The Frenchman has enjoyed a lot of success at Madrid, but his fitness difficulties have prevented him from reaching his full potential.
Despite this, the left-back put up some impressive figures in the Spanish top flight last season, averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 0.9 crucial passes, 1.6 dribbles, and 1.2 long balls per ninety minutes.
Manchester United’s ambitions were severely affected by a lack of quality in either full-back position last season, with Alex Telles, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Diogo Dalot putting in ordinary performances even on their best days.
Given the conditions, one of the board’s top goals in the summer transfer window should be to sign a quality left-back. It’s undeniable that the Red Devils need to improve their defensive options in order to address their concerns at the back.
Ferland Mendy would be an ideal substitute for Alex Telles, who is apparently not part of Ten Hag’s rebuilding plans. The French defender is still in his prime years, so don’t be surprised if he brings a whole new dimension to United’s poor defence next season.
