Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that the fallen Premier League giants can still attract the world’s best players with or without Champions League football in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are set to spend heavily at the current campaign as United continue to struggle in England’s top flight. Solskjaer’s side currently sits in 9th place on the League table and are a staggering 41 points behind table-toppers and fierce rivals Liverpool.
Borussia Dortmund’s teenage winger Jadon Sancho, Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, and Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish are among the few players being linked with a move to United, who are still six points adrift the top four.
Although Solskjaer has acknowledged that Champions League qualification makes it easier to sign better players, the Norwegian has insisted that United still have the power to pull in the top players in the world despite not achieving top tier European football.
Ahead of the crunch clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the 46-year-old has revealed that Champions League football does add some gloss to attracting players but a club the stature of Manchester United should be able to lure in big superstars, “The Champions League gives the club more resources, more money, that’s one thing, It’s a prestigious tournament to be in, of course. But doing as well as we can, and if we play well the rest of the season, and players that we might want are impressed by that, it might be easier to convince them to come here. But I don’t think one season – this season is the Europa League – if next season is with or without the Champions League, I wouldn’t say that’s the be-all and end-all for a player to sign for us.”
