Rio Ferdinand concedes he is stunned by Manchester United’s underuse of Donny van de Beek and accepts the signing ‘would add worth’ to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Van de Beek has gone through a baffling run-of-form season with the Red Devils in the wake of marking from Ajax in an arrangement worth up to £40m the previous summer, beginning only two Premier League games following his prominent change from the Eredivisie.
The midfielder was subbed after given a rare chance to play this week, but he neglected to establish a strong performance during the club’s 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final exit to the hands of Leicester City.
Late reports have shown that the 23-year-old is currently thinking about an exit, while many reports speak that the midfielder could be utilized as a makeweight in potential summer moves with the club intrigued by Borussia Dortmund triplet Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and Manuel Akanji.
Ferdinand has now examined the Netherlands global’s circumstances and concedes he has been amazed by Van de Beek’s last piece of football, demanding the midfielder could ‘add worth’ to the side with his capacity to phantom forward into goalscoring positions.
Ferdinand said: “I think he would add value to this team, definitely. He’s someone who would create goals, he played a part in the goal. When he gets in the box, he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. But to get in the box, he’s got to play in the position where Bruno Fernandes is playing and he’s not going to do that. Can he do it from the No. 8 positions or the No. 6 when he’s holding? I think he can. He’s intelligent enough. Ajax players are brought up to be intelligent footballers, they are able to play multiple positions, he can do that. It’s just obvious United wants a stiffer central midfield area behind Bruno. I get that, given that’s got to be protecting the center-backs and that’s not going to be one of Van de Beek’s strengths. But then it begs the question: why buy him then?”
Ferdinand communicated his compassion towards Van de Beek following a disappointing effort in the Premier League this season, demanding his absence of chances would not have been normal after his late transfer from Ajax.
Ferdinand has some power in his words considering that Van De Beek has been used so little this season.
