Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has suggested that Andre Onana could leave the club this summer, paving the way for Manchester United to make a bid.
Onana is seen as a potential target for United amid uncertainties surrounding David de Gea’s future, as the Spanish goalkeeper’s contract is set to expire soon.
Several goalkeepers have been linked as possible replacements, with the former Ajax shot-stopper being one of them. Frey believes that the current Inter number one might be departing San Siro just a year after joining from Ajax.
However, the former goalkeeper has urged Inter to retain Onana and reject any advances from United. According to the Mirror, he said:
“Football today is different than it was in my generation. [Massimo] Moratti’s Inter could afford to keep a player regardless of the size of an offer that they received. Now, there are other needs to think about.”
“But if it just depended on me, I would keep him. It’s difficult to find a great goalkeeper. If they want to win trophies, then they should keep him. Unfortunately, I think they’ll let him leave.”
Italian reports suggest that Man United are planning to make an offer for Onana in the coming days. The offer is expected to be submitted to Inter Milan early next week, although the exact amount is not disclosed.
Inter have set it’s asking price at €60 million (£51.5 million) and are open to negotiations but unwilling to accept anything below €50 million (£42.9 million).
Onana, who joined Inter from Ajax last summer, had an impressive debut season with the club, making 41 appearances and keeping 19 clean sheets.
In case the deal with Inter falls through, United have alternative goalkeeper options in mind, including Porto’s Diogo Costa and Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
Additionally, with David de Gea’s potential departure, academy graduate Dean Henderson could also be on the move, with Nottingham Forest reportedly interested in signing him after his loan spell last season.
