Football can be a cruel game and someone who was a legend one day can be a villain the other. Frank Lampard took charge of a very young Chelsea side that had just lost its most influential player and was also imposed with a transfer ban.
Despite the odds, he took this team to the Champions League and also the FA Cup final which they ultimately lost but the younger players stepped up to the plate and delivered some impressive performances.
Modern-day football can be ruthless and yet midway through this season, Chelsea has already sacked Frank Lampard. After being imposed with a transfer ban last season Chelsea spent a lot of money and brought some exciting talent into the club. They brought in players like Mendy, Ziyech whose deal was finalised earlier, Timo Werner, and even Kai Havertz for quite a substantial amount. Yet they are pretty far down on the table and have faced six defeats in their 19 games which puts them at ninth position.
While speaking on Sky Sports Neville explained, “I don’t believe that (Lampard took the job too early). Frank was left with no choice but to take the job as Chelsea manager.”
It is truly sad to see someone like Frank Lampard who is a club legend depart in such a manner and even though Chelsea has been going through a rough patch any sustainable progress takes some time. You can simply take a look at Liverpool or even Manchester United with their current form.
It doesn’t happen in a single day and the sacking may have felt shocking but he did give a lot of chances to the youngsters and brought them up the ranks. It may not have been his best time but he was wiser for the experience according to Gary Neville.
