Former Manchester United player Gary Neville called Bruno Fernandes a disgrace for his actions during yesterday’s humiliating loss to Liverpool.
At Anfield, Liverpool thrashed the Red Devils 7-0, scoring six goals in the second half. Bruno Fernandes had one of his worst performances as the club’s captain.
Fernandes begged to be replaced in the 85th minute and Anthony Elanga was brought in at his place. Erik ten Hag has given Fernandes the captain’s armband because Harry Maguire has spent the majority of the season warming the bench.
But, Neville was unhappy with the midfielder’s poor attitude during the match and his demand to be subbed was simply unacceptable.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, he said:
“Bruno Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised saying why aren’t I coming off? Honestly, I have to say that some of his behaviour in this second half has been a disgrace. “
“He’s been brilliant for Manchester United at times, with his assists and his goals. The second half has been an absolute disgrace, a shambles, epitomised no more by the captain Bruno Fernandes, who I think has been embarrassing at times in this game.”
The Portuguese midfielder has excelled since joining the club three years ago. Unfortunately, his improper behaviour has frequently disappointed his followers.
He collapsed to the ground clutching his face during the game when Ibrahima Konate hardly touched him. Fernandes was down hoping for a penalty in response to Alisson’s challenge, which made only slight contact with the midfielder.
Fernandes frequently waves his arms erratically in their direction to express his annoyance to his teammates. There is no denying Fernandes’ status as a star athlete.
He often plays for the team and offers everything he has on the field. But, he can be a burden when things don’t go as planned. It was clearly on display against Liverpool. Things need to change urgently and Erik ten Hag will demand a strict reply from his team in their upcoming match.
