Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has blasted French midfielder Paul Pogba as selfish and embarrassing after his penalty miss against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side were given a bit of a reality check after they hammered Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford last weekend as the Red Devils drew 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.
Anthony Martial gave United the lead in the first half but a stellar strike from Ruben Neves tied the game. But the visitors were handed the chance to earn all three points when Paul Pogba earned a penalty but there was confusion as to who would take the spot-kick as Marcus Rashford had netted one against Chelsea.
There was a bit of a debate and a brief dispute over who would actually take the penalty but Pogba earned this penalty and therefore won the authority to step up but his effort was saved superbly by Rui Patricio. The game ended 1-1 but Manchester United legend Gary Neville was left fuming after the scrap between Pogba and Rashford on the pitch.
While speaking to MNF after the game the ex-England international labeled Pogba selfish and claimed that the penalty taker should be decided before the game in the dressing room, “Something wasn’t right there when we were watching. Something’s not right. All I’m holding back on, initially I was fuming with Pogba. I thought, ‘it’s typical you, it’s selfish. Why are you even thinking of taking a penalty off of a player? But actually, last week’s one, when I’m looking at it, against Chelsea. It’s weird. Something’s not right. And only Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is going to able to shed light on it. It isn’t right. We don’t just come on air tonight and say, ‘which piece of analysis are you doing? Are you doing this one or am I doing this one?’ We decide before we come on. They should decide in the dressing room who is the penalty taker. It’s embarrassing!”
After watching the clip once again, Neville further explained, “This is a Manchester United penalty. This is not a tombola. This is not Under 5s on the playground decides who takes it at the time. Something’s not right”
