Griezmann Was Close To Joining Manchester United

The latest reports have claimed that Premier League outfit Manchester United was close to signing French superstar Antoine Griezmann in the summer transfer window until Barcelona decided to swoop in for the playmaker.

The Red half of Manchester have endured their worst ever start in the Premier League ever since its origin as they currently sit in 12th position on the table with nine points after eight games played. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job has come under heavy scrutiny over the past few weeks and the recent 1-0 loss against Newcastle United at St James’ Park has put him almost close to being sacked.

Due to poor transfer decisions over the summer, Manchester United are struggling to find goals from their attackers. The Red Devils sold off Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in the summer transfer window leaving them weak on big-name forwards at the club. Marcus Rashford has been having a few problems with his finishing and with French star Anthony Martial out injured, United have had to use 17-year-old Mason Greenwood in attack due to the lack of options for Solskjaer.

But according to the latest reports, the fallen Premier League giants were looking to snap up a deal for former Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in the summer. The 26-year-old Belgian hitman joined Inter Milan in a £75 million deal but United wanted to replace him with World Cup winner Griezmann with the funds that were generated.

Griezmann announced that he wanted to leave the Spanish capital in the summer of 2018 and Barcelona was keen on his services, but his move to Catalonia failed at the time and the 28-year-old remained at the Wanda Metropolitano. However, a year late, Griezmann finally got his dream move to the Camp Nou but not before Manchester United expressed their interests and tried to bring him to England.

The 46-year-old Norwegian wanted a striker who could add goals to his team and Griezmann was one of his prime candidates but La Liga champions Barcelona triggered his €107 million release clause and lured him to the Camp Nou.
