Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has admitted that he was afraid of being snubbed by Gareth Southgate in the 26-man World Cup roster.
The 29-year-old defender has been suffering from a disastrous run of form for the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag has preferred to bench the player after his dismal performances in the opening matches this season.
He has been the fourth-choice centre-back at Old Trafford behind Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. Martinez’s spot in the English squad was in danger following his recent snub by the Dutch manager.
However, Southgate who recently admitted that he is a fan of the former Leicester City defender has preserved Maguire’s spot in the starting XI. But it was not easy for the English star as he has revealed that he was afraid of losing his chance of playing for his national side in the World Cup.
As reported by The Sun, he said:
“Obviously being picked for your country is a huge privilege. It’s the pinnacle of anybody’s footballing career to play at major tournaments for your country, World Cups especially.”
“It’s the biggest tournament in the world. Obviously you have fear of (not) being in a squad, but I had great belief over what I have done over the 49 caps I’ve played for England that I’ve earned the trust to be in the squad and be available for the team and the selection.”
Maguire had a dream start for England as he provided an assist for Bukayo Saka’s first goal in the 6-2 win over Iran.
The United centre-back put in a dominant display alongside Manchester City defender John Stones. However, he was snubbed in the second half after he started complaining of uneasiness and fatigue.
Gareth Southgate later revealed that the defender felt some pain and he was subbed as a precautionary measure. Maguire will be fit to play for England in their next contest against the United States.
