Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has made a slight jab at his team and manager Erik ten Hag for benching him.
The under-fire United defender spoke to Talksport following England’s 1-0 defeat to Italy in the Uefa Nations League.
Following an article by ESPN’s Mark Ogden in which he seemed to blame people around him, particularly goalkeeper David de Gea, for his poor club form, Maguire has gained attention throughout the international break.
The former Leicester City player appeared to criticise United for his current status in recent weeks, pointing to his performance at the Euros, which earned him a spot in the squad of the competition.
Maguire did not address his poor form, which he dismissed by claiming he was unaware of any comments or articles made about it.
While having a chat with talkSPORT, he said:
“I am all good, ready to play, I feel fit and fresh. On my form, I don’t know what has been said, I don’t really read about it. I came off the back of three positive games with England in the summer, and a good pre-season, I felt really good. Obviously, the manager [Erik ten Hag] decided to leave me out for a game, and the team have been winning since.”
The player also cautioned fans against believing false reports about him, claiming that as captain of England, he was certain to garner attention.
Maguire backed himself to return to the Red Devils’ starting lineup and declared he would seize the chance if it presented itself. The United captain played for England on Wednesday, pairing with Kyle Walker and Eric Dier.
Although some fans will not be happy with Maguire’s remarks, it is best for the player if he quickly returns to his best form before a busy October season. He will surely be needed in some of the upcoming games.
