As reported by the Daily Mail, English centre-back Harry Maguire put on a dominant display as Gareth Southgate’s side thrashed Iran in the yesterday’s World Cup group stage match.
The Manchester United star faced back-lash for his performances on the club level. However, he has stepped up for his country whenever he has been given the chance to feature in crucial matches.
The former Leicester City star was a key player for the three lions in the Euro 2020 and he proved his worth yet again. His inclusion in the squad raised questions but he has able to bury it with a strong display alongside Manchester City’s John Stones. Maguire provided a sublime assist to Bukayo Saka’s goal in the first-half. However, he was unable to stop Mehdi Taremi from scoring for Iran.
The English defender was substituted in the 70th minute as a precautionary measure as the player started complaining of uneasiness. Southgate decided to take no risk ahead of another important match against United States on Friday.
United fans will be pleased with the centre-back’s performance but they will be right to demand such performances on club level. Maguire has grown his reputation while playing for England, however, he has never been the same for United.
It remains to be seen whether he can come replicate the same form for United after the conclusion of the World Cup campaign.
Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw were also on point against Iran as the former scored a quick second-half goal after coming on as a substitute. The left-back continued to dominate the flanks for England. It seems that his form has begun to peak at the right time for the three lions.
