Juan Mata will depart Manchester United this summer, according to the club’s official website.
He now becomes the third player to leave the club in the past two days.
Mata’s contract expires on June 30th, and his eight-year bond with United will come to an end. Mata joined United from Chelsea in January 2014 for a then-club-record £37.1 million fee, and he went on to win three titles at Old Trafford.
The 34-year-old midfielder was a key player in the FA Cup final victory in 2016, as well as the League Cup and Europa League final victories in 2017.
Mata has made 284 appearances for United, scoring 51 goals and assisting 47 times. He last started against Crystal Palace last month.
Mata came on as a substitute in United’s 1-0 loss at Selhurst Park, and he waved goodbye to the fans after the game.
Mata joined United on a one-year deal last summer, but his last season hasn’t gone as well as he wanted it to be.
United’s points total is at an all-time low, and Mata has only started four times in all competitions. Mata has played a little over 400 minutes across all competitions this season, although he was praised by fans on his previous start at Old Trafford.
Mata is still a popular figure among Manchester United fans, and he is regarded as a cult icon at the club.
