Juan Mata Signs Two Year Contract Extension With Manchester United

The Red Devils have confirmed that Spanish playmaker Juan Mata has agreed on a two-year contract extension with the option to extend his stay for another year at Manchester United which will keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2021.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a massive job on his hands with the club as he aims to get them back to the summit of English football.  The Norwegian needs to find reinforcements to build on his squad but at the same time keep hold of the players that he requires and believes have a future at the club.

But it’s safe to say that Juan Mata had quite a few struggles last season and scored only five goals across all competitions for United. It was also on the cards that Mata would be leaving Old Trafford in the summer because his old contract expired at the end of this season.

However, the Spanish playmaker has been offered a new deal which will keep him at United for two more seasons and the option to further play for another year. Mata is also takin a massive 25% pay cut which will see his weekly earnings drop from £180,000 a week to £135,000 a week.

The 31-year-old Mata arrived at Manchester United from Chelsea back in the summer of 2014 in a £34 million deal and has gone on to 45 goals in 218 appearances for the 20 time League Champions. While speaking over his contract extension, Mata admitted his gratitude for the red half of Manchester, “It is a real honor to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans. I have been at Manchester United for five years and I am proud to call Old Trafford my home, I am looking forward to working with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his fantastic coaching staff; the vision that they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that.”
