As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, although they will likely face stiff competition for his services.
The 19-year-old, who has an asking price of over €150 million, is wanted by Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag, although United’s chances are slightly limited due to competing interest from both Liverpool and Manchester City.
The England international appears to have been a long-term target for those at Old Trafford and could be poised to burst in the upcoming World Cup this month.
The club had been in the running to recruit the talented kid back in 2020 when he was still playing for Birmingham City, but he ultimately decided to accept a £25 million transfer to Germany. Even after paying £70 million for Casemiro in the summer, Ten Hag wants to sign new midfielders. This is especially true after missing out on Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.
The Red Devils had been interested in the Dutchman, who played for the current United manager at Ajax. A sum may have even been agreed upon between the two teams, but the player himself appeared reluctant to make the move.
The midfielder’s ambition to play in the Champions League seems to be a contributing factor in his rejection to move to England, even though his current team will ironically face the United in the Europa League in the round of 16 matches.
The tedious nature of the summer story may mean that those at the Theatre of Dreams are better served to seek elsewhere for a new midfielder, especially as De Jong has shown no real urgency to make the move.
Therefore, Bellingham would be a great replacement should a deal be reached soon. The English star has only improved throughout his time in Germany, particularly this season when he scored nine goals in just 20 appearances across all competitions. Despite his young age, the dynamic athlete has recently been a colossal player for the Bundesliga team, tallying 19 goals and 20 assists for the club in 119 games on all fronts.
The Stourbridge-born star may play in an attacking midfield position but he can also play anywhere in the midfield, including the flanks if necessary.
Bellingham offers true versatility with his abilities and the 19 years old, could prove to be a better investment as the team could potentially be built around him over the course of the next ten years.
