With rumored transfer target Darwin Nunez attracting interest from rivals Liverpool, Erik ten Hag could have already suffered his first defeat as Manchester United manager.
With Edinson Cavani’s exit officially confirmed and unwanted forward Anthony Martial poised to leave the club this summer, United is expected to sign a striker. Cristiano Ronaldo, the club’s leading scorer, is also undecided about returning for a second season.
Nunez is thought to be one of United’s top summer targets, with reports last month revealing the club’s strong interest in the Uruguay international.
The Old Trafford club has now been dealt a major setback in their pursuit of Nunez, with the Daily Mail suggesting that Liverpool has held talks with Benfica about a transfer.
According to the report, Liverpool is prepared to break their transfer record in order to secure his signing and are apparently ‘determined’ to sign the 22-year-old, who scored in both of the side’s Champions League matches this season.
Nunez is also rumored to be interested in joining the Merseyside club. Jurgen Klopp’s team could spend £85 million to sign the fascinating striker.
When it comes to forward targets, few have been linked to United as much as Nunez. He appears to be the club’s main target this season.
It would be a tremendous blow to United’s intentions this summer if he joined Liverpool instead, who have the bargaining chip of being able to play Champions League games.
Regardless of whether Ronaldo continues at the club, new players are required in the frontline, and Nunez could be the ideal candidate.
