Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has stated that midfield ace Paul Pogba is the only player in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side that is capable of winning a Ballon d’Or.
Just before the start of the new season, Paul Pogba was heavily linked with a move away from Manchester United when he admitted that he wanted a new challenge. Pogba spent three seasons at Old Trafford but that alerted interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid as the Los Blancos were keen on signing the French midfielder.
However, Pogba started all four games for Manchester United this season but his performances barring the one against Chelsea in a 4-0 win for the Red Devils on the opening day of the season have been rather underwhelming.
Pogba missed a penalty at the Molineaux Stadium against Wolverhampton Wanderers and was also the subject to racial abuse from fans on social media. However, former French forward in the form of Louis Saha has stated that Pogba is usually the scapegoat for the shortcomings of his teammates.
The 41-year-old ex-United striker Saha admitted that Pogba is arguably the only player under Solskjaer that has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or and is often criticized because of the underperforming players around him, “He’s got the potential to be one of the best – Ballon d’Or potential. No disrespect to the other players but he could say ‘I’m the only one here who could claim to be a world-class player right now’. At the same time, he’s always going to be on the spot because he is the only one.”
Saha further went on to explain, “If he doesn’t perform there’s no-one that’s going to be asked more from. Pogba tries his best, but sometimes there’s no-one there to help him. And who’s going to get criticized for not performing? It’s going to be Pogba. He could have hidden, said he didn’t want to play, but the first couple games he really did perform. He represents so much in terms of potential for United that they ask him to be perfect but he can’t because he’s human”
