Luke Shaw apologised to the Manchester United fans after Sunday’s humbling 7-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. With Liverpool raging at Anfield, it was a night to forget for the Red Devils.
Shaw’s performance was one of his weakest in a United shirt. After the game, the left-back admitted that his team’s performance was humiliating.
United have demonstrated its character and tenacity by coming back from huge losses this season. Yet, it is rather remarkable that Liverpool’s performance came just one week after the Carabao Cup victory.
The Red Devils were underdogs in the Premier League title fight after their outstanding performance after the World Cup. But, the hammering on Sunday put an end to such hopes.
Shaw apologized to the fans for their horrific performance which was one of the worst in the club’s history. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the English full-back said:
“It’s hard to explain this. I think the standards where we have been, it was nowhere near it. I feel embarrassed for the fans and the people who were watching for us. I can only apologise.”
“It’s not going to be easy watching this back. But he [Ten Hag] is going to make us watch it back, and show us what we need to learn from this embarrassment.”
The players should expect a beating from Erik ten Hag, who has been tough on them after losses. The most unexpected element was the way his guys bowed their heads and accepted the outcome.
United will host Real Betis in a Europa League match on Thursday and they have the chance to issue a response. Ten Hag needs to get his team back to their best because it is much needed after the heavy defeat on Sunday.
United are the favourites to win the Europa League after putting in so much effort against Barcelona in the previous round. They must allow Sunday’s unexpected loss to have an impact on their performance going forward.
