Luke Shaw hails ‘unbelievable’ Harry Maguire amid widespread criticism

English defender Luke Shaw believes that United centre-back and fellow international teammate, Harry Maguire has endured more criticism than any other player he has met.

On Monday, Maguire struggled once more, making two errors as England and Germany played out a dramatic 3-3 UEFA Nations League draw at home.

After making a careless challenge on Germany’s Jamal Musiala, the United captain gave up a penalty and lost possession as Chelsea forward Kai Havertz doubled Hansi Flick’s team’s advantage.

Shaw scored the first goal before Mason Mount tied the scoreline. Harry Kane then scored a penalty to give the three lions a lead but they were unable to maintain the scoreline. Four minutes before the final whistle, Havertz scored again to give Germany a point in an exciting second half at Wembley.

Fans were not happy with the United centre-back’s performance and Shaw talked about the issue after the final whistle. Following the game, the left-back continued by saying that Maguire is a crucial part of the England team travelling to Qatar.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Shaw said:

“I will be honest, it is a tough period at the moment. Of course, Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character. He has taken a lot of stick, probably more than I have ever seen before in football but he never hides away, he is always there.”

“At the moment the confidence might not be there because it might feel like the whole world is against him, it is tough for him but us as players, the staff we are all behind him because he is a very important player and it shows Gareth’s trust that he has played in both games.”

Maguire is looking short of confidence at the moment and the 29-year-old needs to give it his best shot in order to gain his original form. He looks far away from the player he was at Leicester City.

Since joining United, the defender had a mixed experience as he has been shining for his country but being below par for the club.

Maguire performed admirably at Euros but past performances can’t preserve your place in the team and the United star needs to regain the fan’s trust before the World Cup.
