Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has admitted that he was at fault for last night’s 1-0 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion.
In the closing moments of the game, Shaw cleared the ball with his hand while defending a corner. After VAR’s involvement, the referee recognised the foul after initially missing it.
The 27-year-old was perhaps United’s best player on the field until the last-minute error. It didn’t feel like he was playing out of position since he was so at ease playing at centre-back.
He misplaced just five of the 44 passes at the back. Every time Danny Welbeck pressed to get the ball, the defender was always aware and didn’t give him a chance to sneak in.
However, Shaw admitted that he was at fault for the last-minute penalty that ultimately cost all three points. While speaking to SkySports, the English star said:
“It hurts, it hurts a lot. It was the last minute, the last action, really, I think. I got a little nudge but, of course, the hand shouldn’t be there – I own up to it and take it on the chin. I cost us the game and it’s tough. I can’t even explain why my hand is up there.”
Shaw was guilty of giving up the penalty, but United’s lacklustre attacking performance also cost them three points. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Antony all had excellent scoring chances but flubbed their lines.
In the second minute of play, Antony received a beautiful assist from Bruno Fernandes, but the Brazilian winger missed the target with his shot.
If he had handed the Red Devils a great start, things may have turned out differently. It was not United’s day at the end and they did lose a chance to solidify their place in the top four spot in the league.
