Manchester United is being connected with a move for another Portuguese sensation playing for Sporting CP, as they eye a £52m move for midfielder Pedro Goncalves.
Goncalves has been a stand-out performer for Sporting following a splendid debut season, scoring 23 goals in 32 appearances for Sporting as they lifted their League trophy after 19 years beating the likes of Benefica and Porto.
The 22-year-old likewise helped Ruben Amorin’s side to the Taça da Liga prize in a spectacular season for Sporting, with Manchester United and Liverpool having been connected with a move for the Portuguese sensation.
As reported by Daily Star, Manchester United is ‘weighing up’ a move for the player, who has played for Sporting in the same position that once Bruno Fernandes played for the club.
Goncalves – who went through two seasons with Wolves as a youngster, however, didn’t perform regularly there – is accepted to have transfer news of around £52m, a figure Sporting is confident of increasing as they bid to avoid interest from England and secure the player to another contract.
The midfielder finished the paperwork for Sporting in a contract worth around £5.85m from Famalicao in the previous summer and will be a part of the Portugal crew for the rescheduled Euro 2020. Goncalves has been linked with a move away and it’s no surprise that United has been linked with the star midfielder.
United will be looking for a powerful player at the heart of midfield. The player was earlier linked with United at the start of this year and Fernandes’s influence at United was a major reason behind that.
He is in contract with Sporting till 2025 and will need to fork out more than £50m to get the player. Being only 22 years old, he still has a lot to give for the team. He can also play in the right-wing position along with central and attacking midfield roles.
Considering his immense potential, United should go for his signature.
